Oliver Shafaat, PhD

A Caltech-trained biochemist, Oliver entered the world of apparel yarns and textiles right after earning his PhD. He moved to Japan and worked for five years at a biotech company specializing in the manufacture of artificial protein fibers for use in apparel. He led the Fiber R&D team, and worked as the technical liaison in business development. He noticed that the significant demand for sustainable materials in the apparel industry was not being met. Turning to 1930s papers and patents, Oliver sought inspiration for sustainable fibers that could realistically scale. This led him to develop and patent the technology for Bylon. Working from years of chemical expertise, combined with fiber and apparel industry connections, Oliver continues to refine Bylon to maximize its commercial potential and positive environmental impact.
